HOW DO I KNOW IT’S TIME FOR AN A/C INSTALLATION?

Well, if your home currently doesn’t have an A/C system, then this is a matter of personal preference. We can tell you that our clients who have upgraded their homes from portable fans or even window A/C units to an A/C system love them for their predictability and for their results.

If you already have an A/C, then it depends on your current system’s age and how well it was maintained. It is not unusual for an A/C system to need repairs or replacement in the 10 to 15 year period, but an in-depth review by one of our HVAC technicians is the best way for us to provide you with the recommendation that you deserve.

We’ll never try to upsell you, or make recommendations that don’t reflect your needs. Green Box is committed to providing you with the recommendations you need and the services you deserve.

WHAT IF MY HOME DOESN’T ALREADY HAVE CENTRAL AIR?

It’s okay! There are central air solutions that can work for homes of just about any size or configuration.

People might be intimidated by the process of installing central air conditioning, but there are a variety of options that can work for your home, even if your home doesn’t have duct work (though some units do require duct installation).

Our HVAC technicians are adept at making recommendations that reflect what’s unique about your home, and integrating those solutions as efficiently as possible, so you can enjoy a more comfortable home, even on the hottest of days.

HOW MUCH DOES AN A/C SYSTEM TYPICALLY COST in Portland, or?

The cost of a new A/C system for your home largely depends on various factors such as the size and complexity of your home's layout, as well as any specific requirements you may have. While the cost can vary significantly, if you're planning to integrate the A/C system with your existing forced air heating system, the costs may start from $6.5k for a replacement in Portland, Or.

The more complex the system, or the more adaptations that need to be made to your existing system (including but not limited to your duct work), the greater the investment.

The best way to really understand your needs and provide you a precise recommendation is by having one of our HVAC technicians provide you with an air conditioning system installation consultation.

ARE THERE DIFFERENT TYPES OF A/C SYSTEMS?

Yes, and though there are many different brands of A/C systems, there are two main types of A/C systems — split systems, and package systems.

The difference between split systems and package systems is this:

Split systems, or “ductless systems” are systems that are installed in homes that do not currently have ductwork that ventilates to each room.  Instead, the systems have a heating/cooling heat pump that is installed on the home’s exterior and then a mainline is connected into the interior of the home and terminates at a “head” that is essentially a wall-mounted unit that delivers the airflow to one or more rooms.  The number of heads installed in your home depends on how many rooms can be served by each head.  These systems are also used to supplement existing central air systems where the upper floor of a split-level home was not originally ducted.

The most common Air Conditioning system is one that relies on the existing ducted ventilation used for your furnace.  A condenser/fan unit is installed on the exterior of your home and is connected to a coil and air blower within the same structure as your furnace.  Sometimes it may be necessary to upgrade your older furnace when putting in a new AC system to make sure the system works as a “package.”

ARE THERE LOCAL CODES THAT NEED TO BE CONSIDERED WHEN INSTALLING A NEW A/C SYSTEM?

HOW DO YOU HELP A CUSTOMER DETERMINE THE RIGHT A/C SYSTEM FOR THEIR HOME?

The best way for us to recommend the right A/C system for your home is by conducting what is called a Manual J Load Calculation.

Essentially, what a Manual J Load Calculation tells us is approximately how hot your home gets in the summer and how cold your home gets in the winter, which in turn tells us what size of A/C unit is most suitable for your space.

There are a number of factors that will influence your MJLC, including how well insulated your home is, the number, type, placement, and how well sealed your windows and doors are, as well as how much direct sunlight your home is typically subjected to. As you might imagine, the more energy efficient your home is, the smaller the unit you’ll likely need, depending on your home’s size and configuration.

WHAT WILL I NOTICE OR WHAT WILL FEEL DIFFERENT ONCE WE GET OUR NEW A/C SYSTEM INSTALLED?

Well, the temperature of your home, of course, will feel a whole lot different. Conventional fans and window units can only cover so much of your home’s territory in their effort to make it cool and comfortable.

A system that is chosen specifically for your home’s unique size and layout will do wonders in keeping your home feeling exactly how you want it to, all year long.

That’s one of the wonderful things about having a new A/C system — you can finally have the confidence that when summer’s hottest days arrive, you’ll have one less thing to worry about, and you can rest assured that your whole family will be cool and comfortable.

IS IT DANGEROUS TO INSTALL AN A/C SYSTEM BY YOURSELF?

We don’t recommend it. Not only are there a variety of codes that must be followed and permits required, but you run the risk of making errors in the process that could not only put the efficiency and performance of your system at risk, but also put the health of your family at risk.

Remember, air conditioning systems push air throughout your home, and without following the installation process precisely and effectively, there’s room or error. These units often contain refrigerants like freon, which help cool the air in your home, but can also pose a threat to your health if there is a breakdown in the system that causes it to leak.

This is why we always recommend working with licensed, bonded HVAC technicians who have skills, knowledge, and experience to provide you with a great install experience, as well as recommendations that will help your system run smoothly for the entirety of its life.
